Services

At Snell and Aurelio Dental Surgeons, we provide a wide range of treatment for the whole family.

DENTAL EXAMINATION, X-RAYS, INTRA-ORAL CAMERA, COMPREHENSIVE TREATMENT PLANNING

We generally recommend 6 monthly visits to the dentist for routine examinations and professional cleaning. This frequency level works well for most people. Some patients require more frequent dental visits for optimal care.

SCALE & CLEANING, REMINERALISING TREATMENT, MOUTHGUARDS, OCCLUSAL SPLINTS

  • Cleaning, polishing, and prevention – although home-based tooth brushing and flossing help remove plaque, only a professional clean by a dentist can thoroughly clean your teeth and remove the hardened plaque (calculus or tartar) that builds up on teeth. After your teeth have been cleaned, they are polished to remove plaque and stains on the tooth surface. We may also offer additional instructions for you to follow at home, based on the results of your exam.
  • Mouth guards are critical for our patients who participate in contact sports. Unfortunately, trauma to the front teeth is far too common, with 1 in 4 patients under the age of 18 sustaining trauma to their front teeth. We want you to be able to participate in physical activity without the risk of damage to your teeth, and hence we offer mouth guards in-house.
  • Unfortunately, about 1 in 5 people grind or clench their teeth. This may be related to the way the teeth bite together, or may be a stress-induced behaviour that causes undue pressure on your teeth and can lead to (amongst other problems) cracks, toothaches, worn teeth, muscle aches, and/or damage to jaw joints. If you experience these symptoms, we will endeavour to find and eliminate the problem and recommend certain exercises to help with jaw/muscle pain. To protect your teeth at night time when grinding is common, our dentists may create special mouth guards (e.g. occlusal splints) that can be worn during sleep.

EMERGENCY TREATMENT, PAIN RELIEF, EXTRACTIONS

Where a dental emergency arises, we will endeavour to resolve the problem as soon as possible. Dental trauma or tooth infection should be treated in a timely manner to prevent unnecessary tooth loss or suffering. Please contact our dental surgery on (03) 9457 1001.

  • We offer a range of different filling types, depending on the situation and tooth in question. Resin Composite is a tooth-coloured material that is frequently used by our dentists, which provides excellent strength and aesthetics.
  • A crown is a type of dental restoration which completely caps or encircles a tooth or dental implant. Crowns are often needed when a large cavity threatens the ongoing health of a tooth or when a tooth is weakened by a heavy bite. A bridge is a fixed dental restoration used to replace a missing tooth by joining an artificial tooth permanently to adjacent teeth or dental implants. Crowns and bridges can be made from many materials, including but not limited to ceramic/porcelain, gold, and zirconia.
  • Dental implants are biocompatible titanium screws that are fused with the jaw bone, to replace missing roots. The screws are then restored with a porcelain crown to complete the missing tooth.
  • Dentures are removable artificial prostheses made of acrylic and/or metal to replace missing teeth. We work with the highest quality dental technicians in the construction of dentures for our patients. We will work with you to create dentures that are comfortable, natural and stable.

OTHERWISE KNOWN AS 'ENDODONTICS'

Inside the hard layers of the tooth is the pulp, which is a soft tissue that contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue. Root canal treatment refers to the removal of infection or painful pulp tissue, cleaning and disinfecting of the pulp chamber and filling up the space with an inert filling to minimise the chance of reinfection. Root canal treatment may be indicated due to large cavities, trauma to tooth, gum infections, and/or heavy bites.

We will discuss the benefits and risks of root canal treatment should it be relevant to you and your dentition.

WHITENING, VENEERS

The type of whitening that may be appropriate for each individual case may vary. This may involve teeth whitening on single teeth (for example, discoloured teeth that have been traumatised in the past or had root canal treatment), or take-home teeth whitening. We will endeavour to find the best whitening solution to meet your expectations.

Veneers are used to enhance aesthetics of front teeth. They are custom made "facings", using tooth coloured materials (e.g. ceramic, resin composite) to bond to teeth hence improving shape, size and/or length of teeth.

TREATMENT, SUPPORT, MAINTENANCE

Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy mouth. Gum disease is a common condition that is largely undiagnosed and overshadowed by other oral conditions, such as decay, because it is mostly a painless disease. Untreated gum disease can lead to (amongst others) loose teeth, gum recession, tooth loss, and bad breath (halitosis).

We screen and diagnose various types of gum disease, and discuss the appropriate treatment and preventative measures to ensure stability of your gum health.
